Bardia National Park

One of the most attractive spot of every visitor to see the magnificent Royal Bangal tiger is about 400 kms. from west of Kathmandu on Terai region. It is situated on the eastern banks of the Karnali river, covering 968 sq. kms. of land extending from the Churia hills to the flat of “Bhabher”. Most part of the forest is covered by Sal (shorea robusta) trees with grasslands and many tiny island created by the Karnali River. It is the home of a wide veraity of animals. More than 30 different mammals and 250 species of birds like Leopards, Jungle cats, Mongooses Sloth bear, blue cows (nilgai), languor and rhesns Monkey, Samber deer, Crocodile, One-horned Rhino (relocated from Chitwan National Park),many more birds. Royal Bangal Tiger is exclusive among them.

Every visitor to Nepal’s Jungles dreams of being one of the lucky one to the spot the magnificent Royal Bangal Tiger. But the tiger is an elusive creature and most jungle visitors are more likely to encounter tiger tracks than the mighty cats themselves. Those who are adventurous, however can greatly increase their chance of a close encounter with the king of Nepal’s jungle by making the journey to Bardia National Park. Located in the remote lowland Terai belt of far west Nepal this park is ideally preserved for those who have a serious interest in Nature.

Once it was a royal hunting preserve area and later formed as a National Park in 1988 with 968 sq. kms. area. The park is an area that was lost to British India as a result of the Anglo-Nepali war of 1814-1816. Later returned the land by British to Nepal for the help during the Indian muting.

The park is bounded by the Siwaliks to the north, the eastern branch of the Karnali river to the west and the Nepalgunj-surkhet road to the east. A large part of the park is hill covered by the sal(sherea robusta) And similar trees.

The bhabar(flatland) are covered with grasses including the short grasslands called phantasm, which are excellent for viewing wildlife. Water channels have created numerous small and big islands. Together the islands grasslands and riverine forest create a mosaic in which wildlife thrives.

Among the distinct types of vegetation found in this mosaic is the silk cotton tree with the beginning of spring it display beautiful large scarlet flowers that attract nectar eating birds. These birds are among the more than 350 species that have been recorded in the park and make it paradise for bird watchers. Ducks, geese, cranes and cormorants are common sight and endangered species such as the sarus crane(Grus antigone) and silvereared mesia(leiothcix argentauris) have been recorbeb in Bardia. Walks along the river are specially good for spotting birds.

The park support two kinds of crocodile and nearly 50 species of mammals. The crocodile found in this park are the gharials with its distinctive long thin snout and the marsh mugger. Among the mammals are the great one-horned rhinoceros(translocated from Chitwan for breeding), wild elephant leopards wild boar, swamp deer, barking deer, sloth bear, hog and spotted deer, blue bull. The Karnali river offers a good fishing adventure for the angler. Mahseer is famous among them.

The park is undoubtedly a place you must visit if it’s the tiger you want to see. There are about 75 breeding tigers. Baiting is still allowed but most tiger sigheing come during the elephant rides, walks, boat trips and vehicle safaris.
